These Are a Few of My Favourite Things

We are generally pretty frugal, but at Christmas we like to splurge a little.

Here are my three favourite Christmas gifts this year.

A how-to jewelry book with a little info on steampunk culture thrown in.  Now I just need some jewelry making supplies!

An incubator!  I almost bought Limey the same thing.  I'm collecting fertile eggs now so I'll get to use this soon.

I guess that's really four gifts.  I've been drooling over the aprons on Etsy for awhile now and Limey outdid himself this year by making these two aprons for me!  It was his first go at sewing and he did pretty well don't you think?

What did you get for Christmas that you absolutely love?

  4. Cool incubator,oh you are going to love it! Let us know when you set your first hatch. So exciting!!!
Would you consider selling some fertile eggs come spring?

  5. We'll definitely be selling fertile eggs. The chickens are slowing down a bit at the moment, but hoping to do an experimental hatch in a week or so.

We also plan to breed various orpingtons, easter eggers, barred rocks and quail next year.

  6. Hi ! Really you just need a set of round nose pliers ...to start. They make the loops. There are tons of tools but none really as useful as those. As for cutters and regular pliers, most people have some in the home tool box to start with. If you love it & want to do more, then finer cutters and pliers are good. But to dive in - round nose !!And then a few "parts" like eyepins, headpins, jumprings, maybe wire - especially if you like steampunk style. I was going to try it this past week but got distracted by lovely new stamps, paints, inks, and fabric ... So many ideas ... only so many hours !!! Maybe I'll see you - please introduce yourself if you come in !!!

  8. Great blog. Your husband rang today about quail and red bourbon eggs. We tried this incubator when we first started out, and our comment to the feedstore was "why do you sell crap like this you know does not work?" They just shrugged. We moved on to the more expensive cabinet style incubator, which does the job. I suggest you try keeping the room as warm and as draft free as possible when you try your first hatching. Humidity is also key, the chicks can't break the eggs without even humidity.

  9. I don't have a havo but I know some people that do and have had successful hatches. The key to a successful hatch is the temperature then humidty.....I struggled with it....up and down but in the end still had good hatches, the last three days is when it's most important.....you don't want sticky hatches.
I'm sure you'll be fine.....a wreck by 21th day but fine! LOL Get yourself a good hydrometer to set inside.....if you have to turn the eggs by hand you'll be opening it everyday.....I took notes everyday....what the temp was, humidity, when I candled etc......then I had a record to look back on in case something went wrong. If you need anything at all I'm just an email away:)

  10. Limey bought an egg turner so I don't have to fiddle with that. Will get him to pick me up a hydrometer. We just put 15 eggs in as a test run!
